Building Healthy Play Spaces

Building A Safe, Beautiful Environment

We need your help to rebuild our destroyed playground! Hurricane Maria devastated St Croix and many of our neighboring islands. Our schoolhouse sustained damage, however, our outdoor spaces, including our playground, were completely ravaged by the storm. Our wonderful parents banded together, cleared tree limbs and debris from our grounds, and St. Croix Montessori was able to re-open just two weeks after the storm.

In the aftermath of the storm, St. Croix Montessori is providing an incredibly important point of stability and reprieve for our children. A safe, beautiful environment to play and grow is critically important as our island community continues the process of disaster recovery.

How Your Support Helps

In the words of Maria Montessori, “Play is the work of the child,” and after the destruction of our beautiful trees, we want our children to have a space in which to thrive.

Our school is dedicated to expanding access to high quality primary and elementary education in the Virgin Islands. Over half of our students receive need-based waivers, and 100% of giving is directed into our programs. St Croix Montessori has been selected as Play By Design’s 2018 Charitable Project! Play By Design designs unique, community-built playgrounds, and so we are very excited to work with them to design and build a natural playscape that will last for many years to come!

Your support will directly provide:

  • Slides, Play houses, and other child-inspired play features
  • Shipping of these environment-friendly equipment to our island home
  • The nuts and bolts – literally! – to put it all together!

The Urgency

Our community will be coming together in March to build our new playground. It’s a positive, healing experience for us to build something new and beautiful!

Small, non-profits like us depend on giving and grants to keep our programs thriving. In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria’s devastation, we are not able to hold our annual signature event – The Taste of India Benefit Dinner. We are redirecting our energy to reaching out to our wider community – you!

We hope you will join us in providing a safe and enriching environment for our children, and helping us in our educational mission!

Ways To Get Involved

Volunteers!

We need builders, food donations, building supplies, childcare leaders, and tools, tools, tools (on loan of course). The build dates are March7, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th.

Shifts are from 8am-12pm, 12:30-4:30 and 5pm-8:30pm. Volunteer builders are fed after their shifts.

Please contact Christina at cdmcpherson@gmail.com to let us know how you can help.
