International Baccalaureate – Middle Years Program (6th Grade for 2023-24)

St. Croix Montessori is excited to announce the island’s first and only International Baccalaureate program. We have been awarded candidacy status, which a school must have for at least one year before seeking authorization.

The Middle Years Program (MYP) is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world.

The MYP curriculum framework comprises eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced education for early adolescents.

The MYP requires at least 50 hours of teaching time for each subject group, in each year of the program. In the final two years of the program, carefully-defined subject group flexibility allows students to meet local requirements and personal learning goals.

The MYP is open to any student aged 11 to 16, at schools that have been authorized to implement the program. St. Croix Montessori will grow by one grade level each year as we build our MYP program. For the 2023-24 school year, we are offering a grade 6 IB MYP, as a candidate school.

The MYP is inclusive by design; students of all interests and academic abilities can benefit from their participation. Implementation of the MYP is a whole-school endeavor, although the program can accommodate academically-selective models.

The aim of the IB is for all involved (adults and students) to aspire to the IB Learner Profile:

We have chosen the IB because of its many benefits to our students (top colleges and universities around the world seek IB graduates); its student-centered, whole-child practices; and its mission (which is very much aligned to the Montessori ethos at our school).

“An education capable of saving humanity is no small undertaking; it involves the spiritual development of man, the enhancement of his value as an individual, and the preparation of young people to understand the times in which they live.”
